Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse
Most expensive light house ever built by the USA, off of Situate, Mass. It guards a shoal that is only visible in good weather for 2 or 3 hours a day. 1st one was made of metal and was washed away. The granite one has lasted over 100 years even though waves occasionally crash over it’s 85 foot height. Only bachelors were allowed to crew the light house because it was so isolated. Also it was one of the first light houses to be automated. Today in good weather people will boat out there, climb up the ladder and jump from the door, 30 feet up. If you really like it, the “I Love You” light house is for sale. It was put on the market by the federal government in 2009, but so far, no takers. Perhaps potential buyers are discouraged by the commute?
