onceuponatown:

New York. The Brighton Beach Hotel being moved away from the beach, using flatcars on 20  railroad tracks and locomotives, Brooklyn, 1888.
The Brighton Beach Hotel was the start of resorts like Coney Island (next to it). Originally it was a farming community, nestled between sandy dunes. A promoter wanted to turn it into a resort so he built the hotel and a horse racing track. Named the area Brighton, after the English resort town. Due to it proximity to the ocean there was a fear the hotel would be destroyed by a winter storm surge so they decided to move it back. This was the largest building moved in the 19th century. Eventually the city of Brooklyn annexed Brighton (then New York annexed Brooklyn). A subway was run out to the site for day trippers. This led to there no longer being a need for an overnight stay. The Hotel closed in 1924.
